The Biggest Delusions Indians Believe In

India, a nation steeped in rich history, vibrant culture, and enormous potential, is also home to certain commonly held beliefs and mindsets that may not align with reality. These beliefs, often rooted in patriotism or tradition, can sometimes cloud judgment and hinder progress. However, it’s crucial to question these beliefs, as it empowers us to think critically and engage in the discourse of our nation’s history and culture. Here’s a look at some of the most prominent delusions many Indians continue to believe in—and why it’s important to question them.

1. India Was Always a Peaceful Nation

Many Indians grow up believing that India has always been a peaceful, non-violent civilization. While non-violence has been a part of India’s philosophical heritage, the idea that ancient India was completely pacifist is a myth. The subcontinent has seen countless wars, empires, and military strategies. From the Mauryan and Gupta empires to the Cholas and Marathas, India’s history is filled with powerful kingdoms that expanded their territories through warfare. Embracing this truth doesn’t diminish India’s cultural richness—it enlightens us and opens our minds to a more balanced and realistic view of the past.

2. India Is a Global Superpower in the Making

There is a strong sense of national pride in India’s rising economic and geopolitical influence. While India has made great strides in sectors like IT, space research, and pharmaceuticals, calling it a global superpower may be premature. The country still struggles with poverty, underemployment, poor infrastructure, and health disparities. True global leadership requires not just economic growth, but also innovation, education reform, infrastructure, and strategic influence. Believing India is already a superpower can create a false sense of achievement and deter much-needed reforms.

3. India Is the “Vishwaguru” (Teacher of the World)

The belief that India is destined to be the spiritual and philosophical guide of the world is deeply embedded in the national psyche. This pride stems from the contributions of Indian philosophy, yoga, and ancient sciences. However, the notion of being a global teacher requires more than historical contributions. It calls for current relevance, international respect, and the ability to set moral or intellectual standards. Without addressing social issues, education gaps, and scientific development, claiming the status of a world guru becomes symbolic at best.

4. Ancient Scriptures Contain All Scientific Knowledge

There’s a widespread belief that ancient Indian texts contain all the scientific discoveries the modern world has made—everything from aviation to atomic energy. While ancient Indian thinkers made groundbreaking contributions in mathematics, medicine, and astronomy, the tendency to exaggerate these achievements can backfire. Science progresses through rigorous testing, experimentation, and evidence. Revering ancient texts is fine, but they should be studied with critical thinking, not treated as infallible scientific manuals.

5. India Has a Singular Cultural Identity

Despite being one of the most diverse countries in the world, there’s a persistent push toward projecting a single Indian identity. This overlooks the diversity of languages, customs, cuisines, religions, and traditions that coexist within the country. Trying to define “Indian culture” as one homogenous identity flattens this richness and creates unnecessary divisions. True unity comes from respecting regional differences, not erasing them.

6. Fluency in English Equals Intelligence

In many parts of India, being fluent in English is often seen as a mark of intelligence and modernity. As a result, those who speak regional languages fluently but struggle with English are often unfairly perceived as less capable. This mindset not only marginalizes non-English speakers but also undervalues the immense literary and intellectual wealth in Indian languages. Intelligence and capability aren’t determined by accent or language fluency, but by critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.

7. India’s Past Was a Golden Age

India’s past was not a utopia, but it was also not devoid of achievements. It’s important to strike a balance in acknowledging both the advancements and the mistakes of our history. This balanced view allows for more informed decisions in the present and a more realistic understanding of our past.

8. India Is the World’s Largest and Most Effective Democracy

India is indeed the largest democracy by population, but size doesn’t automatically translate to effectiveness. Issues like voter manipulation, corruption, weak institutions, and bureaucratic inefficiency continue to plague the democratic process. For democracy to be truly successful, it must empower citizens, ensure transparency, and hold elected leaders accountable. Voting alone doesn’t guarantee democratic integrity—active civic engagement and legal enforcement do.

9. Indian Culture Is Superior to All Others

While it’s natural to feel proud of one’s culture, the belief that Indian culture is inherently superior to all others can foster arrogance and isolation. Every culture has unique strengths and weaknesses. The idea of cultural superiority can lead to resistance to new ideas, intolerance, and the dismissal of constructive criticism. Instead, a healthy cultural identity thrives on mutual respect, openness, and exchange with others.

10. Science and Rationality Are Western Concepts

There’s a perception that science, critical thinking, and rationality are Western imports, and thus foreign to Indian traditions. In truth, ancient Indian scholars like Aryabhata, Charaka, and Sushruta practiced empirical study and logic centuries ago. The problem isn’t that India lacks a rational tradition—it’s that superstition and unquestioning belief sometimes overshadow it today. Reviving a scientific temperament means honoring our own intellectual legacy while also embracing modern advancements.

Final Thoughts

India stands at a critical juncture, balancing its ancient heritage with modern aspirations. But progress requires more than economic growth or international recognition—it needs clarity, self-awareness, and the courage to challenge comforting myths. By embracing a more honest view of its past and present, India can better shape its future. This balance offers hope and optimism for a future that is shaped by awareness, curiosity, and critical thinking.

By embracing a more honest view of our past and present, we can better shape our future. This is not about rejecting traditions or losing pride, but about refining our identity through self-awareness, curiosity, and critical thinking.
